Trailer repair on I-595 in Broward County

I-595 is the county's freight spine — thirteen miles from Port Everglades to the I-75 and Sawgrass interchange, carrying port drayage, airport cargo and everything crossing Broward east to west. It is also short on shoulder. Call and give us the nearest interchange and your direction of travel.

Where on I-595 are you?

There are no mile markers worth quoting on a road this short — the interchange name is faster and more accurate. Tell us which one you have just passed and whether you are running east toward the port or west toward Sawgrass.

The SR-84 frontage road runs alongside most of I-595. If you can still move safely, getting down onto it is almost always faster and always safer than sitting in the median or on a narrow right shoulder.

Before we get there

I-595 has express lanes running down the middle and short merge distances at nearly every interchange. That combination makes the left shoulder the worst place in Broward to stand next to a trailer. If you have any choice at all, take the right and get to the frontage road.

Triangles out well back — traffic here is moving faster than it looks between interchanges. Stay off the traffic side of the trailer, and if you are in a live lane, that is a call to *FHP before it is a call to us.

What to tell dispatch

  • Nearest interchange, and east or west
  • Right shoulder, frontage road, or live lane
  • Trailer type and whether it is loaded
  • The symptom — air, brakes, lights, gear
  • Whether the tractor can still pull it
What breaks on this road

Air leaks and dragging brakes

Stop-and-go from the port through the I-95 merge works the air system harder than any other stretch in the county. Glad hands, lines, chambers and valves. Air repair pricing.

Landing gear after a drop

Port and cargo yards drop and hook all day, and bent legs show up on the road rather than on the lot. Landing gear and kingpin work.

Hubs on a loaded drayage run

Short heavy runs with long idle periods are the worst case for bearings and seals. Heat is the tell. Bearing and hub service.

Lights, and the inspection that follows

A lamp out on I-595 is an easy stop for enforcement, and it rarely ends at the lamp. DOT inspection · lights and wiring.

Questions from this corridor

I am in the express lanes. Can you reach me?

Not safely, and neither should you stay there. The express lanes have no usable shoulder and no exit until the next opening. That is an FHP call first — get moved out, then call us.

Can you meet me at a port or cargo gate?

Tell dispatch which gate and whether escort or a badge is required. Access rules at Port Everglades and the airport cargo area are not something to discover when the truck is already at the barrier.

Do you work the SR-84 frontage road?

Constantly — it is where most of this corridor's repairs actually happen. If you can get onto it, do, and tell us the nearest cross street.
